What is GHG?

Greenhouse gas (sometimes abbreviated GHG) is a gas in an atmosphere that absorbs and emits solar radiation (the suns rays). This is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect, where solar radiation is trapped within the earth’s atmosphere. The primary greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone.

Since the beginning of the Industrial revolution, the burning of fossil fuels (diesel, petrol and kerosene) has contributed to the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 280ppm to 390ppm (parts per million). This increase in carbon dioxide has resulted in an increase in trapped solar radiation and temperature, more commonly known as climate change (global warming). This does not mean that everywhere will get drier and hotter, but that weather systems are likely to become more unpredictable, seriously effecting rural people.

of global GHG emissions arise from deforestation – that’s more than the worlds entire transport sector. In Tanzania 65% of GHG emissions arise from deforestation – That’s more than power generation, transport and industry. Carbon dioxide is stored in woody biomass (trees) and released when the tree is cut down and burnt or converted to charcoal. Carbon is also stored in the soil so when trees are removed the soil carbon is also released into the atmosphere.

In Tanzania, the main driver of deforestation is poorly planned agriculture and biomass consumption (charcoal manufacture).

25tCO2e (25 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide) is equivalent to 1 ha of woodland protected.

To give you an example, a vehicle travelling 20,000km a year with an average consumption of 9km / lt diesel would cost 60USD per year to offset or 50cents a day at 150 days.
